Basic Air Rifle

Lesson 1 – Introduction to the rifle

  1. Understand basic firearms safety
  2. Utilize eye and ear protection
  3. Recognize and identify basic parts of a rifle
  4. Understand the functions of those parts
  5. Determine their eye dominance
  6. Understand the basics of range rules and etiquette
  7. Demonstrate the sequence of elements required to fire a shot at target backs from a supported position
  8. Have fun while learning

Lesson 2 – Shooting for groups on target backs

  1. Demonstrate understanding of sight alignment
  2. Understand how to use different types of sights
  3. Understand sight alignment
  4. Understand sight picture
  5. Understand and demonstrate trigger control
  6. Demonstrate the sequence of elements required to fire a shot at target backs from a supported position
  7. Practice the coach-pupil method of instruction
  8. Practice safe range and shooting procedures
  9. Have fun while learning

Lesson 3 – Shooting for groups on target backs

  1. Demonstrate sound rifle shooting principles
  2. Effectively shoot groups using a center of mass hold on a blank target
  3. Practice safe range and shooting procedures
  4. Have fun while learning

Lesson 4 – Teaching sight picture

  1. Understand the concept of sight picture
  2. Demonstrate the ability to shoot groups by using consistent and proper bench-rest shooting position
  3. Demonstrate ability to adjust sights properly to move the point of impact to the desired location
  4. Understand the relationship between sight alignment and sight picture
  5. Understand and use triangulation
  6. Have fun while learning

Lesson 5 – Shooting for scores and scoring targets

  1. Demonstrate proper sight adjustment on the rifle
  2. Fire a modified ten-shot match from the bench-rest position
  3. Practice scoring targets
  4. Have fun while learning

Prerequisites & Progressing

Prerequisite for Basic Air Pistol

  • Attend at least one full year in Basic Air Rifle or Basic Archery course
  • Maintain Marksmanship scores in either course for at least 3 consecutive sessions
  • Memorize gun safety rules
  • Instructor and parent must agree on participation in the Basic Air Pistol course

Progressing from any Basic course to the Intermediate course

  • Attend at least one full year in Basic course
  • Maintain Marksmanship scores in Basic for at least 3 consecutive sessions
  • Memorize gun safety rules
  • Memorize basic rifle parts and explain their function
  • Instructor and parent must agree on promotion to Intermediate course

Progressing from any Intermediate course to the Advanced course

  • Attend at least one full year in Intermediate course
  • Maintain Marksmanship scores in Intermediate for at least 3 consecutive sessions
  • Memorize marksmanship principles
  • Memorize shooting positions
  • Memorize range commands and procedures
  • Instructor and parent must agree on promotion to Advanced course
